The Area The area around Wellington Barn will delight any country-lover and the landscape is rich in wildlife and ancient history. Only a few miles away is the magnificent 'Avebury Complex'. The neolithic Avebury stone circle is a mile across and has a village and pub inside it. Silbury Hill and the West Kennet Long Barrow are also nearby. These ancient sites date back to before 4000 BC and are older than the Pyramids! The barn is surrounded by open farmland and downland. The area is home to many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Deer can often be seen bounding over the fields, Skylark song fills the air all summer long and Bush Crickets can be heard chirruping away in the evenings - a sound rarely ever heard in Britain. The nearby picturesque market towns of Devizes, Marlborough and Calne are all steeped in history and there are many idyllic and unspoilt country pubs in the surrounding villages. Most of them serve excellent food and beer. The local brew is Wadworth's 6X, still brewed in Devizes and delivered locally by a team of Shire horses. Calstone is a paradise for walkers. There are footpaths leading in every direction. It is possible even at the height of summer to walk for several hours without seeing a soul! But for those not wanting to stray too far from the venue, a wildflower meadow has been planted around the barn and we look forward to seeing it mature in the coming years.
